Paper delivered at the New England Popular Culture Association meeting, Worcester, Mass., Nov. 1, 2003, based on a ms. autobiography of Mary Catherine (Severance) Winchester. Clifford relates Mary's account of her own school years to other sources of information about the education available to rural girls and young women in Vermont in the middle of the 19th century.

Mary Catherine Severance was born in Middlebury, Vt., the daughter of Ebenezer Severance and Corcina (Jones) Severance. As the eldest of nine children in a farm family, Mary struggled with endless home chores, but was eventually able to attend terms at Middlebury Female Seminary, Castleton Seminary, and the local district schools, where several scholarly young Middlebury College students encouraged her passion for learning.
